The ups and downs of pregnancy…

Well, it was confirmed on Friday that Amy does have Gestational diabetes. This is basically when a pregnant women becomes diabetic due to their pregnancy. What does it mean?

Well, at first, not much. Amy needs to work with her regular doctor and current baby doctor to find out if it could be caused by other medication she is on. If not, she may then have to see a nutritionist who will try to alter her diet so to control the glucose levels. We are a bit skeptical on this since her diet is already pretty healthy and low in sugars. Time will tell though.

The concern with the gestational diabetes is that since the body can’t break down sugars quick enough, the baby will absorb more sugar than normal. If that’s the case, the baby can grow to a larger than expected size and possibly be delivered early.

At this point we are trying to take it one day at a time and learn as much as we possibly can. With the baby’s expected due date of October 5th, there is only about 10 weeks left to “deal” with it.

The good news though is that this should have no negative effect on the baby or Amy after the pregnancy. The diabetes should be long gone with only a small risk at returning later in life. It’s just the fact that Amy’s body is going through so many changes during the pregnancy! It’s amazing how the body works!
